Down Syndrome Profile

Perpsective of a man with Down Syndrome

When I was a child i had trouble learning to speak as fast as other children. When I got older I also looked different from the other kids My neck is shorter and my face and nose more flat. In gym class I also noticed i wasn't as strong as the other children. Once I got into grade school I realized i wasn't as smart as the other kids in my class I couldn't learn as fast as them and I couldn't speak as well as they could. Just because I look different and I don't learn as fast doesn't mean I am not capable of learning or living independently. I still feel the same emotions as you do. I am always optimistic, just because I learn slower than others doesn't mean I can't succeed at whatever I put my mind to.

What is down Syndrome

Down Syndrome results from having a extra chromosome 21 in your body, the extra genetic material causes physical and mental impairments.

Physical Affects of Down Syndrome

Some of the physical effects of having down syndrome are having decreased or poor muscle tone, having  a short neck with excess skin at the back, flattened profile and nose, small head ears and mouth, upward slanting eyes.

Effects on the Brain

Down Syndrome has quite a few effects on the brain which can vary from mild to moderate in most cases. Some of these problems are short attention span, poor judgement, slow learning and slowed language and speech development.
